These series of guest posts are written by the teams attending the Tetuan Valley Startup School Fall edition. The Silver team, formed by Hector Criado and Fernando Alonso, is presenting their project, SolAR.
With smartphones sales rising, even in the middle of the crisis, and green energy becoming a new mantra for an increasing number of citizens, it just seemed to be question of time (specially time to get more efficient and cheaper photovoltaic cells) to see some solar chargers available for your smartphones.
In less that 3 months, one of our favorite blogs, inhabitat, examined 3 brand new solar gadgets for iPhone:
The first gadget to be analyzed was Solar Surge, from Novothink, which in fact is the first solar charger licensed by Apple. Solar Surge is a case for iPod or iPhone which can recharge your gadget directly under the sun, or storage some power in its battery and charge it when there are not enough direct light, so you don’t have to leave your beloved iphone directly under the sun for hours.

The other two devices have been developed by Regen, located in San Francisco. Their first product to be blogged was ReNu, which is composed by a solar panel and a battery pack and is able to charge Ipods, Iphones and any other USB device. ReNu can also be combined with an iPod dock or an audio dock system.

The latest product from Regen is ReVerb, a cool but expensive ($2,229) combination of sound system and solar panel.

And for Android fans, treehugger showed us a nice example of a solar smartphone from ZTE, to be released during the second quarter of 2010.

These examples show how solar energy (and greentech in general) will be applied in the future to consumer electronics. We at SolAR, are working on the opposite way: how to apply consumer electronics to greentech… hopefully our work during the last weeks at Tetuan Valley startup school helped us to boost our project, so stay tuned!
