The surprising truth about what motivates us

These series of guest posts are written by the teams attending the Tetuan Valley Startup School 2010 Fall edition. This post is from the Rumor team, formed by Xavier Burruezo & Sergi Consul.

After all these weeks of post, with long text and few images, we think you need a video. We could put a funny video, a video of a girl talking about make up or that famous girl that exercises in front of the camera… . But being this Tetuan Valley’s blog, let the video at least be somewhat educational.

We are going to talk about a video from RSA Animate . They take great pitches and make amazing animations with it. The video we have chosen is called: the surprising truth about what motivates us.

The key points from the video are:

  • The monetary reward only works properly if the task is mechanical.
  • Monetary rewards don’t motivate us. A higher salary doesn’t make us work better or perform better, actually makes you perform worse.
  • Even thought money is not a motivation; if you don’t pay enough then it becomes a demotivation. Workers don’t have to think about the money, then, they ‘ll perform better.
  • Autonomy is a good motivation. If a team member has autonomy, then he engages in the work.
  • You have to challenge your team, as well as let them improve their skills.
  • Give the team a purpose.

So the business model of Noodles is great, but we need to follow this key points so we motivate our team!.
