Crisis could do us a favor!

These series of guest posts are written by the teams attending the Tetuan Valley Startup School 2011 Spring edition. This post is from the Workab team, formed by Jaime de la Cal, Alberto Fernández and Alejandro Segura.

For many years, it has been very difficult to find people with the need to create new things (thinking out of the box) in Spain. The good conditions we had in our country for several years were due basically to 3 industries, bank, construction and tourism. This limited the creative capacity of the people. How many people were willing to risk if they felt like they didn’t need to?

However, with the crisis, things have changed a little bit. And now, we can find two types of new entrepreneurs that are coming with new ideas and projects.

The first group would be all the workers (team managers and directors) who suddenly became unemployed due to the crisis. And second one (where we are) would be all the young talent that after graduating from college were unable to find a job that could satisfy them, so they are deciding to try to create their own.

We are seeing new initiatives (like TetuanValley) that are promoting the new entrepreneurial spirit wherever they go. But it is not only in TetuanValley, universities and business school are adding everyday more startup classes in their course plan and I believe that everyday more people are getting interested in this new era of entrepreneurship.

We know that the path is very long and difficult but I can tell you from where I am that it is way worth it just to try it…

Hopefully we take advantage of this situation of uncertainty that we have in Spain, and in a few years when we look back, we could be reminded that this crisis was the opportunity that we took to reinvent ourselves and create new things.

  1. Necessity is the mother of invention, right?

I agree with what you describe, and am glad for the “kick in the pants” as my grandfather would say  , as Spanish society did/does need it. Although I would also add in the group of neither young nor unemployed, but also immigrants/ex-pats that realize good ideas are being listened to instead of just depending on who you know in the “old school” traditional marketplace.

  2. I´m absolutly agree with you…. ABSOLUTLY.
It´s unacceptable that the young people prefers to be government employee instead to try to be a entrepreneur.
