Taking the big step

These series of guest posts are written by the teams attending the Tetuan Valley Startup School 2011 Spring edition. This post is from the Timpik team, formed by Camilo López, Francisco Cuenca, Francisco López y Guido Pedrelli.

The conditions to start a business in the entrepenour life are not the same for everyone. Sometimes you begin your journey right after college while other times you start it sort of ’forced’ because you lost your job and you see an option to start your own business.

Today I am going to write about those people that already have a job, but are also  planning to start something, if they have not started it already. This situation could be seen as both, the easiest situation for an entrepreneur and also the most difficult one. The easiest because you have a stable job with a stable income and a stable life. So, why its also the most difficult? Well, sure you wont have money problems, but if you are really into your project, into your startup, you will have sleep problems. Not because you will be afraid of competitors or what to do next (ok, may be because of that, but not the main reason), you will have sleep problems because the day has only (who knows why…) 24 hours, and most of them are used by “the other job”.

At the begining I am sure you can do both things and do well at both of them, but also there will be a moment where your startup will require more time (new features, new meetings..) and that is good, because its means things are working, but you will be running out of time. You will feel like a bird in a cage. Yeah, sure you can fly inside, but you want to fly out there. Or a man with an iron ball attached to his leg (like the prisoners and ghosts in old movies), sure you can run, but you would run much much faster without that weight. That was pretty much how I felt before a took “the big step”, the step where you say: If I really believe in my project, this is the right thing to do.

If you are in a similar situation my advice is: save some money and take the step in the right moment. The money you saved will be your fuel while your project is trying to take off and be sure not to carry too much weight while doing that.
