The storyteller evolution

These series of guest posts are written by the teams attending the Tetuan Valley Startup School 2010 Fall edition. This post is from the Este cuento se ha grabado team, formed by Madelón Lánchez and Marcos Triviño.

Something big is coming. It’s not about technology but the way people feel and live life, and how we communicate our feelings and aspirations to others.

Long time ago, before Gutenberg, we used to speak a lot.. Telling stories was the only way to transmit and to pass on what’s going on!… then, printing press arrived and everything changed!… and then, so few years later, something changes the world again: photography..and then films!

A word spoke-aloud… a word wrote… and now a huge and complex mechanism formed by words, sounds and images, fighting for capture our attention, making us feel sometime so outstripped!..

But… what’s about kids? They were born into this incredible media mix era and they are learning so fast how to manage it… faster than anyone of us, digital immigrants, could imagine and learn!.

Magic Tales it’s going to be part of this change, but we are not alone. Projects like The Pedlar Lady of Gushing Cross or Talespring show us others very interesting points of view about the topic…

And we are so excited to be part of this wonderful time, plenty of challenge and business but transcendental opportunities. We got the sound and now we are working on find people who want to make this trip with us!..

If you feel you love the idea us much as we do, don’t hesitate to be in touch!

We are not alone… Thank God?

We were working on our first article; thinking about different ideas, looking for the great topics… when we received a mail from David, a Tetuan Valley mate who resolved to make for us an impressive market research. In that mail he told us THE BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!… he finally did it!! He found our competitors. Our hearts were running faster than ever!!

We started two years ago studying the entertainment and educative markets. We were looking for business signals related to elearning, serious games, and things like that. We are classical audiovisual professional people but we were, and we still are, very interested in finding news and funny ways to use our know-how to develop new opportunities… we are pretty sure about we are living a moment of big changes in the audiovisual industry and we must take the train if we want to survive!

We felt in love with a project: to give the opportunity to moms, dads, grandpas & grandmas, etc. to live a very personal experience with their children thanks to the recording of their favorite fairy tales with their own voices. Then they can hear it with a magical music background and sound effects.

We explained this idea to many people in Spain, and most of them told us: “which parent will loose their time doing such a thing?… A game?…This is for the children, but not for parents!”

Two months ago, we finally found a technical partner, who liked the project and came onboard, so we started bringing this dream into reality. But, at the same time we realized that we were having some doubts about the idea’s viability… if it is such a good idea, why nobody is already doing it?.. Maybe those people who told us “this is not a good idea” were right!!

We now know that other companies have invested to develop similar ideas and have made them real. So we see two possible ways to affront it: “well, it is too late for us. Our idea already exist as a product… we are not the first one!” and therefore surrender… or in the other side we could be very happy because this fantastic product already exists… and the challenge for us is to determine how we are going to do it better!

We have chosen to keep going this magical trip because now, more than ever, we feel we are on the right train! And we are delighted to have some company on the road. Thanks David for your email!
